Registration

Before you can use Lockbox, you need to register once in order to create your personal Lockbox credentials. This is essential for Lockbox to guarantee the security and privacy of your information.

Before You Start

Before you launch the Lockbox client, make sure that you have got the latest Java version installed on your computer. See the Installing Java Guide for more information.

Launch Lockbox

To register, direct your browser to the Lockbox home page and launch the Lockbox application by clicking the ‘Start Lockbox’ button.

The Lockbox client launches in a separate window.

Click on "Register Here"

To register, click the ‘Register Here’ button (see graphic on the right).

Note:

If you start the Lockbox application for the first time, it may take a few moments to download all required modules. However, loading times are typically a lot faster for every further launch of the application due to Java and browser caching.

If the Lockbox client does not launch, please consult with the Launching Lockbox Guide.

Follow the Registration Wizard

Provide user details

Note:

Lockbox requires only a minimal set of personal information about you that is essential for creating your personal Lockbox credentials:

  1. Provide your first name, last name and email address.
  2. Read the terms and conditions.
  3. Accept the terms and conditions by ticking the check box.
  4. Press the ‘Next’ button.

After pressing ‘Next’, an email containing a registration code will be sent to you to verify your email address.

It is essential for the use of Lockbox that you provide a valid email address to which you have full access. If you do not receive the confirmation code, please refer to the Troubleshooting Guide.

Please provide meaningful input for first name and last name because both are used in various notification emails sent between you, other Lockbox users and clients.

Enter registration code

Note:

Go to your email client and check for an email from notifications@lock-box.net.

Retrieve the registration code from the email and enter it in the Lockbox application.

If you experience problems with the registration code, e.g. due to a wrong email address, press the ‘Back’ button which brings you back to the previous screen, where you can change your details and create a new registration code.

The registration code needs to be entered within 30 minutes after it was generated. If the notification email arrives late or you fail to enter the registration code on time, you are required to create a new valid registration code.

Enter passphrase

Enter passphrase

You need to specify a passphrase to protect your personal Lockbox credentials. Type in your passphrase, confirm it and then press the ‘Next’ button.

The passphrase must be at least 6 characters long and may contain any special character.

Lockbox strongly recommends the use of long passphrases in excess of 10 characters. As usual, pick a passphrase that cannot be guessed easily and add special characters such as _-:#%&* to make your passphrase strong.

To protect your security and privacy, Lockbox staff are unable to recover or reset your passphrase. Please ensure you will always remember your passphrase.

Store credentials

Note:

Every time you log in to Lockbox, you are required to produce your personal Lockbox credentials. To make using Lockbox easy, you can store your credentials on your computer where Lockbox will find them automatically – without prompting you.

Select ‘store my credentials locally’ if you want to store your credentials on a computer that you use regularly.

Select ‘I do not normally use this computer’ if you do not use the current computer regularly.

Your credentials should be kept as secret as possible. If an adversary gains access to your credentials and your passphrase, Lockbox can no longer guarantee security and privacy of your information. Therefore, make sure that access to your credentials is limited for third parties at all times. Store your credentials only locally, if you know, and trust, who has got access to the computer.

Your credentials will not be lost If you decide not to store your credentials on the local computer. You will have the opportunity to backup your credentials later.

Backup credentials

Backup credentials

Your personal Lockbox credentials are now generated. They, together with your passphrase, form the key to access your information in Lockbox. It is essential to ensure availability of your credentials as corruption or loss leads to irrecoverable loss of all your data in your Lockbox.

Select ‘Backup Credentials to Lockbox’ if you want Lockbox to keep a backup of your credentials.

Select ‘Backup Credentials Locally’ to backup your credentials locally on a device of your choice.

Lockbox strongly recommends to backup your credentials to a secure area on our server. We run regular server backups and ensure high availability of your data. Moreover, this option allows you to access your Lockbox anywhere and at anytime without having to worry about your credentials.

If you decide to backup locally, Lockbox strongly recommends to store the backup on a device to which access for third parties is limited to a minimum, such as your private PC or laptop, a USB key or even a flash memory card. You may also want to consider to keep more than one backup in order to have a fall back in case one copy gets lost or corrupted.

You can change your mind about your credential backup at anytime. The Lockbox client allows you to backup your credentials to Lockbox as well as locally.
