Launching Lockbox
If Lockbox does not launch properly, it may be because Java is not installed or there is a browser related problem.
Lockbox Does Not Launch
- Make sure that your computer runs the latest Java version. See ‘Before You Start’[link to the Before You Start page] for details on how to verify the Java version and install Java.
- Clean up temporary Internet files from your computer.
- Go to the ‘Start Menu’ and select “Programs / Accessories / System Tools/ Disk Cleanup”.
- It may take a few moments for the program to inspect your computer.
- Confirm the removal of temporary Internet files by clicking the ‘OK’ button.
- If neither of the first two steps resolves the problem, please contact Lockbox for further assistance. To learn how you can help Lockbox in rectifying the problem, please refer to the ‘Debugging Guide’ [link to debugging tips]
Browser Downloads but Fails to Open Lockbox Application
Your browser may fail to run the Java start file used for launching the Lockbox client because the file type is not associated with the Java Web Start Launcher program.
Some browsers (most notably MS Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Apple Safari) rely on the operating system to provide this association.
- Go to the ‘Start Menu’ and select “Default Programs”
- In the newly opened window, select “Associate a file type or protocol with a program”
- Wait until the list of file types has been populated, then browse down and select the list entry for the JNLP File type.
- Click the ‘Change program…’ button.
- In the ‘Open with’ window, select ‘Java(TM) Web Start Launcher’ and press ‘OK’. Alternatively, if the Web Start Launcher is not available,
- Press the ‘Browse…’ button.
- Navigate to C:/Program Files (x86)/Java/jre6/bin (for 32bit Windows versions, navigate to C:/Program Files/Java/jre6/bin).
- Select ‘javaws.exe’ and press the ‘Open’ button.
- Press ‘OK’ in the ‘Open with’ window.
- The list of file types is updated, which may take a few moments. However, you can close the window at anytime by pressing the ‘Close’ button.
If the above did not solve the problem, you can also try to set the association in the browser.
Browser Opens a Dialog Box and Prompts for Input What to Do with the Lockbox.jnlp File
Your browser may ask you what to do with the Lockbox.jnlp file during the Lockbox launch. You are typically prompted to decide whether to open or save the file.
First, make sure that the JNLP file type is associated with the Java (TM) Web Start Launcher application. Refer to ‘Browser downloads but fails to open Lockbox application’[link to previous entry] for help. Secondly, do the following:
For Internet Explorer 9
- A download dialog pops up at the bottom prompting: “Do you want to open or save Lockbox.jnlp' from www.lock-box.com?"
- Select the 'Save' button.
- A 'download completed' dialog pops up.
- Click the little triangle on the right of the ‘Open” button to expand a list from which you need to select the 'Open with' option.
- Select Java (TM) Web Start Launcher and press ‘OK’ to launch the Lockbox client.
For other Internet Explorer versions
- Select ‘Open’.
- If you launch Lockbox for the first time, the security settings on your computer may require you to accept a certificate and/or trust Lockbox. If so, a dialog box appears that warns “A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer”.
- If you want Internet Explorer to remember this setting, tick the ‘Do not show me the warning for this program again’ checkbox.
- Select the ‘Allow’ button and the Lockbox client launches.
For Mozilla Firefox
- Select ‘Open with’.
- Click the combo box button and select ‘Use Java (TM) Web Start Launcher.
Alternatively, if the Web Start Launcher is not available,- Select ‘Other…’

- press the ‘Browse…’ button.
- navigate to C:/Program Files (x86)/Java/jre6/bin (for 32bit Windows versions, navigate to C:/Program Files/Java/jre6/bin).
- select ‘javaws.exe’ and press the ‘Open’ button.
- If you would like Firefox to remember this setting, tick the ‘Do this automatically for files like this from now on’ checkbox.
- Press the ‘OK’ button to confirm your selection and to launch the Lockbox client.
For Chrome
- If you launch Lockbox for the first time, the security settings on your computer may require you to accept a certificate and/or trust Lockbox. If so, a dialog box appears that warns “This type of file can harm your computer. Do you want to keep download.jnlp anyway?”
- Select the ‘Keep’ button.
- Click the little triangle to expand a menu in which you need to select the ‘Always open files of this type’ option.
- If the Lockbox client does not launch, click the ‘Start Lockbox’ button on the Web page again.
For Safari
If the JNLP file type is not associated with the Java (TM) Web Start Launcher in your operating system, either option, ‘open’ or ‘save’, will not work. Please refer to ‘Browser downloads but fails to open Lockbox application’[link to previous entry] for a solution.
- Click the ‘Open’ button to launch the Lockbox client.
For Opera
- Click the ‘Open with’ combo box and select Java (TM) Web Start Launcher. Alternatively, if the Web Start Launcher is not available,

- select ‘javaws.exe’ and press the ‘Open’ button.
- If you would like Opera to remember this setting, tick the ‘Remember choice and do not show dialog again’ checkbox.
- Select ‘Open’ to launch the Lockbox client.
Launch the Lockbox Client on Mac OS

After starting up a browser on your Mac computer, follow the below steps to launch the Lockbox Client:
- Go to http://www.lock-box.com/ and click the 'Start Lockbox' button in the top-right corner.
- In the 'Opening lockbox' dialog, choose 'Java Web Start' in the 'Open with" combobox, if not selected, then press 'OK'.
Alternatively, you can tick the 'Do this automatically for files like this from now on' to avoid this popup window the next time you start up the Lockbox Client.
- Click the 'Open' button in the warning dialog that ask your confirmation whether to open the Lockbox Client.
- As any other Java Web Start Application, the Lockbox Client requests access to your computer. Select 'Allow' in order to enable the Lockbox Client to function properly.
Alternatively, tick the 'Allow all applications from client.lock-box.net' with this signature' checkbox to avoid this popup window the next time you start up the Lockbox Client.
After completing the above steps, the Lockbox Client launches and you will see the login screen.
Internet Explorer Cannot Download File .jnlp
As part of providing the highest possible security, Lockbox login functionality is provided over SSL. However, some early versions of Internet Explorer do not store files downloaded by SSL on your local computer. If this happens, you may receive an error message which reads like:
"Internet Explorer cannot download file .jnlp from www.lock-box.net." Or
"Webstart cannot open ..."
You can fix this by going to the "Tools" or "Edit" menu (depending on the version of IE you are using) selecting "Internet Options", then clicking on the "Advanced" tab. Scroll down to the “Security” section and de-select the option "Do not save encrypted pages to disk". Click "Apply" and then click "OK".
Having this option selected breaks a large number of applications and after initially defaulting it to on, Microsoft did change it to be off, so it is unlikely you will run into this problem. However, if your browser is old enough, or the install of your current one is based on upgrading a problem release of Internet Explorer the option may be set.
Security Certificate Warning
If it is your first time using Lockbox, the security settings on your computer may require you to accept the Lockbox certificate. The certificate is used to ensure to you that the Lockbox client originates from Lockbox and that no alterations to the code by third parties have been made. Should you see these dialogs please select ‘OK’ or ‘Run’ as directed.
Internet Explorer 6 certificate warning
Since IE6 is not supported any longer it did not get updated to accommodate some of the recent upgrades. As a consequence, IE6 displays a warning when launching Lockbox because it does not support the latest 2048 bit certificates which are used by Lockbox's Certificate Authority.
