Box Types

Lockbox supports three box types that are tailored to the needs of specific users.

Standard box

This is the default stand-alone box.

It is typically called simply ‘box’.

A standard box is a bidirectional space for information sharing. The creator (owner) of a standard box can use it to store private information. They can also invite other Lockbox users to share all or parts of their information.

A standard box is access controlled. Only the box owner and users who were specifically invited to the box are permitted to access it. Before being able to access a box, users are required to register with Lockbox - in order to create their login credentials which comprise a unique username, a passphrase and a keystore that holds a set of credentials.

Sub-boxes

There are two types of sub-boxes: client boxes and shared client boxes.

Client box

A client box establishes a protected space for bidirectional information sharing between a Lockbox user and exactly one client.

A client box is not stand-alone. It is created by a box owner or an administrative user as a child of a standard box.

A client box is access-controlled. Only the box owner, all invited users of the parent box and the client are permitted to access it. The Lockbox user who creates a client box specifies the client’s username and sets a pre-defined passphrase (which can be reset by the client at any time). The client is required to log into the Client Portal in order to gain access to their client box.

Shared client box

A shared client box creates a directed broadcast channel that allows Lockbox users (box owner or invited user) to share the same information with multiple clients.

It is a unidirectional read-write broadcast channel for a Lockbox user who intends to share the same information with all associated client users. The Lockbox user has full permissions to perform all file and folder actions.

It is a unidirectional read-only space for clients who can only access and read documents but cannot perform any write actions such as file/folder delete, rename, move or upload.

A shared client box is not stand-alone. It is created by a box owner or an administrative user as a child of a standard box.

A shared client box is access controlled. Only the box owner, all invited users of the parent box and all clients associated with the parent box are permitted to access it. Clients are required to log into the Client Portal whereas Lockbox users are required to log into the Lockbox Client.
